Making Disciples of Jesus

At my church we have been talking about ‘making disciples’ (Matthew 28: 19-20). Several thoughts from my pastor Rick Schwartz have encouraged me, and in this blog, I share some reflections on disciples and disciple-making.
A disciple is someone who says “yes” to Jesus in every area of their lives.
In order to make disciples it helps to understand what a disciple is. In Jesus day, Jewish rabbis (teachers) were surrounded by their students (disciples), much like apprentices. In Jewish tradition, the best followers were said to be the ‘dust of the rabbi’ disciples, meaning they followed their rabbi so closely that they picked up everything about him, including his dust.
When Jesus began his ministry, he called disciples to follow Him. They had a choice: they could say ‘yes’ to Jesus, or ‘no’. Saying ‘yes’ meant abandoning their daily jobs and relationships to join Jesus in His work and learn from him...
